Delhi is one of the oldest continually inhabited cities in the world. It contains the famous 'seven cities', a collection of fort-based settlements surviving from the city's turbulent history of invasion and plunder; followed each time by regeneration with renewed vigour. It still encompasses magnificent landmarks and monuments of its past that narrate the story of their glorious past...
New Delhi is the destination for those wanting a mystical combination of old and new. The city is steeped in interesting history with a wide range of sights, smells and sounds to keep those senses alive.
Steeped in history, this city has many attractions that are well worth a visit and will give you a taste of the past. The National Museum is home to thousands of historic artefacts and displays in the spacious galleries of this excellent museum. Exhibits include rare relics from the Harappan Civilisation, Central Asian antiquities (including silk paintings from the 1st century AD), Indian textiles, tribal masks, sculptures, musical instruments, old coins, miniature paintings and weapons.
Some of the amazing tourist sites the city has to offer are Humanyun's Tomb, which was the inspiration for the Taj Mahal. The 12th century Qutub Minar located at Mehrauli is the highest stone tower in the world; the Red Fort located in Old Delhi was built by the Moghul Emperor Shah Jehan who also built the Taj Mahal.
Another not to be missed site of cultural heritage is the stunning Jama Masjid mosque, the largest in India. Construction of the mosque began in 1644, but it wasn't completed until 1658. It has three gateways, four angle towers and two minarets standing 40m high and is constructed of alternating vertical strips of red sandstone and white marble. The mosque`s courtyard can hold a mind-blowing 25,000 people.
Make sure you have enough time for the lanes of the old city, the craft bazaar of Dilli Haat; the sprawling expanse of the well laid out lawns & monuments in Lodhi Gardens; the architecturally acclaimed expressionist style Lotus Temple built in 1986 as a Baháí House of Worship; Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple, a truly amazing piece of architecture or the spiritual serenity of the shrine of the Sufi saint Hazrat Nizamuddin.
