Travelling in Delhi

Delhi is the air, rail and road hub of India. Transport and travel in Delhi is organized to the level of most developed countries. The capital city is well connected with the rest of India and the world.

There are various options available for city travel in Delhi. Delhi Transport Corporation (DTC) runs a large fleet of buses covering all areas of the city and is the cheapest mode of transport. There are also private city bus operators, auto-rickshaws and cycle-rickshaws for Delhi city travel. Tourist taxis ply interstate while the yellow and black taxis can be used to commute anywhere within the city and are safe but relatively expensive. Luxurious special tourist buses are also available with packaged tours to all the tourist attractions in Delhi.

Delhi is well connected to all the major cities of India by a network of highways and roads. There are three Inter State Bus Terminals (ISBT) at Kashmere Gate, Sarai Kale Khan and Anand Vihar; as well as many starting points in and around the city, from which various state-managed and privately run transport facilities operate air-conditioned, deluxe and ordinary coaches. Popular bus routes connect various destinations of Rajasthan, Haryana, Punjab, Uttar Pradesh, hill stations of Himachal Pradesh and Uttaranchal.

delhi metroThe Delhi Metro, is probably Delhi’s fastest and best means of transport, but only if you are going where the Metro wants to take you, as it is still under construction and only Phase 1 covering parts of Delhi is completed. However, by the year 2020 Delhi will have one of the best Metro systems in the world when Phase 2 would be complete.

Physical construction work started on October 1, 1998 and has proceeded smoothly with the first line opening on December 24, 2002 and the entire metro station delhi Phase 1 of the project was completed in December 2005, on budget and almost three years ahead of schedule, an achievement described as "nothing short of a miracle" by BusinessWeek.

Mr. E. Sreedharan, the Managing Director of the Metro during the Phase 1 construction, was declared "Indian of the Year for 2007" by CNN-IBN news channel.

rail travel delhiIndia's rail network is the largest in the world and Delhi's three major railway stations at New Delhi, Old Delhi and Nizamuddin are connected to all major rail routes of the country. The New Delhi Railway Station is located only half a kilometer from Connaught Place. Long-distance trains go to all corners of the country from here. Old Delhi Railway Station is located near the heart of old Delhi, Chandni Chowk. Long-distance trains run from here to major destinations of India. The Nizamuddin Railway Station is located near the holy shrine palace on wheels train new delhiof Hazrat Nizamuddin. This is a major railhead for trains connecting the western and southern states of India. The Delhi Cantonment Railway Station at the Delhi Cantonment area is the starting point for some of the luxury trains of India such as the Palace-on-Wheels (right), Fairy Queen and Royal Orient Express.

Delhi has two commercial airports - the domestic and international terminals of the Indira Gandhi International Airport (IGIA). In 2005–06, the IGI Airport recorded a traffic of more than 9 million passengers. However in 2007, Indira Gandhi International Airport handled 23 million passengers annually and the planned expansion program will increase its capacity to handle 100 million passengers by 2030. The new Terminal 3 building, currently under construction and expected to cost US$1.94 billion, will handle an additional 37 million passengers annually before the start of the 2010 Commonwealth Games. In September 2008, the airport inaugurated a 4.43 kilometer-long runway, making it Asia's longest runway. From the city center the domestic airport of Delhi is roughly about 7 km away and the Delhi international airport is 11 km.
