Delhi lies 225 metres above sea level and since it is far away from the sea, the weather in Delhi varies with the five seasons - summers, monsoon, autumns, winter and spring. During summer, Delhi is very hot. Summer temperatures can shoot up to 47°C. The summer months, which extend from March to June, are hot and humid, with a lot of sunny days.
The monsoon season starts in July and lasts till August. It can be hot and humid in the monsoons when the rain stops. However, while it is raining it is fairly pleasant.
October-November in Delhi is the Autumn season. The average temperature during the day during these months is around 22°C and the evenings are cool and pleasant. The best time of the year for visiting Delhi is between October and February.
The extreme climate makes the winters very cold when the temperature goes below 4°C. The winter season in Delhi and North India are marked by morning mist and fog whereas the afternoons are sunny and pleasant. The maximum temperature recorded in a cold Delhi afternoon is approximately 12°C whereas the average minimum temperature is about 2°C or lower.
The weather in Delhi during Spring is temperate and pleasant when the temperature varies between 25°C to 10°C from mid February till the end of March. This is the best season to visit Delhi to see greenery and flowers at the historical monuments.
As Delhi enjoys a tropical weather all year round, you are advised to bring summer clothes, sports wear and boat wear, all preferably in cotton. Evenings may tend to get cool in certain areas, as such you are advised to carry warm clothing as well.
Footwear to be carried should include sandals & sneakers. Sunglasses, hat, sun block creams and a powerful anti-mosquito lotion are essential during the summer time.
