Indian Wildlife, is unique and diversified which is protected by the Government. The most majestic of them all is the Indian Tiger, a highly endangered species; the Indian Tiger is slowly regaining its lost ground under the protection of  'Project Tiger'.

Indian has number of Wildlife Reserves and National Parks. The most famous among
them are:

Jim Corbett National Park
majestic tiger at jim corbett parkIndia's first National Wildlife Park lies at the foothills of Himalayas and spreads over an area of 520 sq kms along the banks of Ramganga river. The tigers are the main attraction of the park, and Ramganga is the home of prehistoric reptiles too, whereas the other carnivorous include the leopard, bear, hog, sambar, muntjac, fox etc. The park has more than 300 species of birds such as ducks, snipe, egrets, herons, spotted eagle, harrier, woodpecker, darter, cormorants and thrushes. The lake of the park also attracts a large number of other species of water birds. The park opens from November 15 to June 15. Located approx. 290 kms from Delhi. Nearest Rail Station is at Ramnagar. Keoladeo National Park, Bharatpur
siberian crane bharatpur bird sanctuaryA six-hour journey from Delhi, the former princely state of Bharatpur is well connected by road and railway. Time has seen this place in great splendor and today Bharatpur is famous for the Kalaheo National Park or popularly called as the Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary. Colorful kingfishers, pelicans, Siberian cranes and trans-continental fliers - migratory water fowl are amongst the 375 species of birds found here. The geographical location of Bharatpur is ideal since it is on the main North-South avian route of India, and is spread in an area of 29.89 sq kms.

Legend has it that the place was named as Bharatpur after the name of Bharat, the brother of Lord Rama, whose other brother Laxman was worshipped as the family deity of the Bharatpur rulers. Laxman's name is engraved on the state arms and the seals of the Bharatpur rulers. The city and the fort are believed to be founded by Rustam, a Jat of Sogariya clan.

Ranthambhor National Park

Other carnivorous in the park are leopard, hyena, jackal, fox, caracal, ratal and bears. The park has over 300 varieties of birds like peafowls, parakeets, storks, egrets, flycatchers, eagles, owls, etc. Wildlife-rich Ranthambhor is equally rich in archeological monuments. The fort of Ranthambhor, situated on a large hill, is inaccessible even today from any side except for its gate. The Archeological Survey of India has declared it a protected monument. The park opens from October to June, while November to March are the best months to visit it. Located around 388 kms from Delhi and 185 kms from Agra, with the nearest domestic airport at Jaipur and International Airport at Delhi. Nearest railway station is at Sawai Madhopur. Bandhavgarh National Park

Periyar Wildlife Sanctuary, Kerala

Although an excursion on the splendid artificial lake is the standard way to experience the sanctuary, you can also resort to walking with the local guide in a small group but be on a lookout. In other attractions of the sanctuary, sambar, bison, spotted deer, tigers, leopards, Malabar flying squirrels, stripe-necked mongooses, etc. Over 260 species of birds including Nilgiri wood pigeons, blue-winged parakeets, white bellied tree pies, laughing thrushes and fly catchers. The park opens from February to May. Located around 208 kms from Madurai and Trivandrum. Nearest domestic airports are Madurai & Trivandrum. Railway station is at Madurai & Trivandrum. Kaziranga National Park
one horned rhinoceros at Kaziranga National ParkKaziranga  is a national park in the Golaghat and Nagaon districts of the state of Assam, India. A World Heritage Site, the park hosts two-thirds of the world's one-horned rhinoceroses. Kaziranga boasts the highest density of tigers among protected areas in the world and was declared a Tiger Reserve in 2006. The park is home to large breeding populations of elephants, wild water buffalo, and swamp deer. Kaziranga is recognised as an Important Bird Area by Birdlife International for conservation of avifaunal species. Compared to other protected areas in India, Kaziranga has achieved notable success in wildlife conservation. Located on the edge of the Eastern Himalaya biodiversity hotspot, the park combines high species diversity and visibility.

Buses owned by Assam State Transport Corporation and private agencies between Guwahati, Tezpur, and Upper Assam stop at the main gate of Kaziranga on NH-37 at Kohora. The nearest town Bokakhat is 23 kms away. Major cities near the park are Guwahati (217 kms) and Jorhat (97 kms). Furkating (75 kms), which is under the supervision of Northeast Frontier Railway, is the nearest railway station. Jorhat Airport at Rowriah (97 kms), Tezpur Airport at Salonibari (100 kms), and Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati (217 kms) are the nearby airports.

Sultanpur Lake
About one and half hour away from Delhi is located a peaceful picnic spot which experiences large crowds on holidays. Sultanpur a lesser-known place around Delhi was developed as a Bird Sanctuary on the lines of Bharatpur. The place has good accommodation facilities and restaurants for food. The swamps of the lake have many species of birds. It attracts numerous varieties of migratory birds in winters. Don't forget to carry a good pair of binoculars and a camera if you plan to visit this amazing bird sanctuary. The place has a Jungle Guesthouse for staying, which organizes various activities for the guests.

Sohna Lake
Sohna Lake situated on a hillock just 60 kilometers off Delhi in Haryana has a very famous lake and spring. Sohna Lake is slowly turning to be a health resort. The hillock is not very high but gives a picturesque view. Unpack your bags and take a walk around the park and lake. If you are comfortable with sulphur then take a dip in the hot spring. If you feel up to it go for the Damdama Lake in the vicinity. The lake resort also has facilities for water sports and camping. There are beautiful cottages made on the pattern of huts which are a must stay.

Surajkund Lake
The Surajkund Lake near Delhi is another destination to visit. The lake is very popular among tourists because of the Surajkund Crafts Mela that takes place here in the month of February every year, when craftsmen from all over the country assemble. The lake is actually a reservoir that was used to store water during the reign of the Tomar Rajputs. The lake remains dry during summers but is filled with water in monsoons. Equally attractive is the Badhkal Lake in Faridabad. The lake is small compared to Surajkund and Damdama but is worth visiting because of the migratory birds. The place has night stay facilities and a campfire. But your best bet around Delhi is Sultanpur Bird Sanctuary.
